GeoRing makes it easy to create and shuffle ringtones from your iPhone on the go without the need to jailbreak because it is available in the App Store. Unfortunately, while the concept is great, it misses the mark by a split second. A couple little issues keep GeoRing from being a really great app to just a simple and fun one.
The main issue is the difficulty to pin point when a song should start as a ringtone, which is important if you are trying to use your favorite guitar riff or the chorus of this week’s top iTunes song. I couldn’t get the slider to select on the second I wanted the ringtone to start, it would jump a second or two as soon as I took my finger off. The second issue is no ending point selection, making it impossible to set just a 10 second clip as a ringtone. The final issue, which is most likely an iTunes/Apple limitation, is that you can not use a “Protected” song downloaded from iTunes as a ringtone.
Personally, I still prefer to use iTunes to make ringtones because I can easily select start/stop points, specified down to the one one thousandth of a second, all while still being able to differentiate my contacts with individual ringtones. Although, with a couple of UI changes like adding a numerical starting points, ending points, and contact integration, GeoRing would become immensely more useful and replace my dependence on iTunes.
Pros -
- Create Ringtones without iTunes
- Shuffle Ringtones
- Mark Locations of Answered Calls
Cons -
- Cannot use “Protected” Songs Downloaded from iTunes
- Difficult to Adjust Starting Point of Songs
