Tweetings HD seems like a beta version of the best Twitter app available for the iPad. HD:design comes close to delivering excellence with a clean design, coupled with the most features offered but just can’t bring it all together. It feels powerful and convenient initially but then it begins to appear that some of the existing features weren’t fully completed before the implementation of newer ones.
Tweetings HD nicely utilizes the iPad’s screen with tabs and navigation in the left column and timelines to the right. The composition window pops up as a separate box floating above the timeline, as do individual tweets and user profiles. The advanced features, while buggy, include: clickable links, (websites, pictures, and user profiles) directly from timelines, TwitLonger auto-expansion inside Tweets in the timelines, automatically building conversation history under replies, user auto-complete with ‘@’ for mentions/replies, and much more tucked here and there within the app.
If all of the loose ends in Tweetings HD can be tied up and the app receives the full polishing it deserves, it will be the hands down winner on the iPad. Unfortunately, update after update seem to keep neglecting some of the nagging issues that should have been addressed first. Which is a shame, because it’s a great app that is only being held back by it’s overachieving desires.
