Notes are a simple way to keep those important ideas from being forgotten but choosing a notes app can be quite a challenge due to the numerous choices available in the App Store. Notacious offers an elegantly clean looking app with some great features, while still managing to keep it simple. It is initially available on the iPhone and iPod touch, with the iPad and Mac soon to follow. Once an account is created, notes sync automatically across all connected devices through the Notacious website.
Usage is simple; compose a note on your iPhone and it automatically syncs to the website. Notes can also be accessed and edited from the website. The theory is that once a note is edited in one location, it synchronizes across the other platforms but this doesn’t work as smoothly as it should. I noticed that new notes generally synced as intended but any changes to existing notes did not sync between devices unless the device was logged out and back in.
There are some nice visual options with 5 fonts, in 3 easy to read colors, available in 3 different sizes. Notacious also includes native iOS spell check (the red dotted underline), which is an added benefit that some developers overlook, that helps misspellings stand out. A Premium upgrade is also available as in in-app purchase for $2.99 that adds the ability to lock notes, natively email notes, as well as, the promise of more premium features to come.
Notacious is definitely a great looking app at an outstanding value as the sync service is included with the initial purchase. Unfortunately, until the synchronization between devices is addressed, it won’t be the notes app to keep all your devices up-to-date.
